Airborne soot is acidic and can start corroding metal fixtures within about 48 hours, which is why Soot Cleanup response speed matters as much as the cleaning technique itself.

Our technique avoids the streaking that comes from wiping soot with a rag.
Porous surfaces like drywall get different treatment than tile, glass, or metal.
Soot turns corrosive on metal within about 48 hours — we move quickly.
HEPA vacuums capture fine particulate instead of recirculating it into the air.
Sponges get replaced frequently during a job since a soot-saturated sponge starts redepositing particulate.
This step happens before any wet cleaning, since vacuuming first prevents particulate from smearing when surfaces get wet.
Tile, glass, and metal get a different chemical treatment than porous drywall and wood.
We prioritize metal fixtures early in the job since the corrosion clock starts immediately.
Ceilings get cleaned before walls, since falling particulate would otherwise recontaminate freshly cleaned wall surfaces.
We clean vents and returns as part of the same visit, not as a separate service call.
A technician answers and schedules the fastest available crew.
Mobile units are equipped for both porous and non-porous surfaces.
You approve the scope before any sponge or solvent touches a surface.
Cleaning proceeds surface by surface with a final walkthrough to confirm.
"We tried wiping the soot ourselves and just smeared it worse. Meridian Smoke Damage's sponge technique actually lifted it without streaking." — Homeowner, Fairfax
"Fast response meant the metal fixtures got treated before any real corrosion set in." — Homeowner, Fairfax, VA
"HEPA vacuuming before the wet cleaning made a visible difference — the carpets came out cleaner than I expected." — Homeowner, Fairfax
Regular cloths tend to spread soot rather than remove it.
Ideally within 48 hours, since acidic soot residue starts pitting metal fixtures after that.
Surface type determines whether we use dry sponges or solvent-based cleaners.
Cleaning the particulate and neutralizing the odor are related but separate steps.
Yes, HEPA vacuum extraction handles soft surfaces before any wet cleaning begins.
Usually within the hour, with Fairfax crews staged locally.
We keep response times short across Fairfax specifically because soot corrosion is a time-sensitive problem.
